Landscape & Garden Design

Thoughtful spaces, inside and out.

Your home doesn’t end at the back door. Whether you’re extending your home, creating an outdoor entertaining space or simply rethinking the garden, considered landscape design can help make more of the space around you.

Downland Studio can introduce you to experienced independent landscape designers who may be able to help develop your ideas, from initial concepts to more detailed garden design.

Designing beyond the building

A natural connection between home and garden.

An extension can change how you use your garden. New doors, different floor levels, terraces and outdoor seating all influence how inside and outside spaces work together.

Thinking about the garden early can help create a more considered overall design, rather than leaving the external space as an afterthought. Downland Studio can introduce an independent landscape designer to explore those opportunities alongside your architectural project.

Explore the possibilities

Make more of your outdoor space.

Every garden is different. An independent designer can help you decide what would make the greatest difference to the way you use yours.

01

Garden design

From a complete garden redesign to improving the layout of an existing outdoor space.

02

Outdoor living

Patios, terraces, seating areas and places designed for relaxing or entertaining.

03

Planting & materials

Planting, paving, finishes and materials considered alongside the character of your home.

04

Landscaping alongside extensions

Bring the garden into the conversation when considering new doors, external levels, access and the relationship between inside and outside.

From ideas to design

You don’t need to have it all worked out.

Some homeowners have a clear vision for their garden. Others simply know that the space could work better.

You might want a few professional ideas, a concept to help shape your plans or a more detailed design that can be developed towards construction. The right approach depends on the garden, your ambitions and the level of detail you need.

Downland Studio can help make an introduction to an independent designer, who can explain the services they offer and discuss what may suit your project.

A straightforward introduction

The right specialist for your project.

There’s no obligation to appoint a designer after an introduction. You can talk through your ideas and decide whether the proposed scope feels right for you.

01

Tell us about your ideas

Whether you already work with Downland Studio or are simply considering garden improvements, start by explaining what you have in mind.

02

We make an introduction

Where appropriate, and with your permission, we can introduce you to an independent landscape or garden designer.

03

Discuss scope and fees

The designer will discuss your requirements, explain the services they can offer and provide their own quotation.

04

Develop your garden design

If you decide to proceed, the specialist works directly with you under their own appointment.

Where relevant, architectural and landscape design information can be coordinated within the agreed responsibilities of each professional.

Thinking about an extension?

Make the most of what happens outside, too.

A new kitchen extension, larger family room or set of glazed doors can change how you connect with the garden.

Considering the outside space alongside the architectural design can help make better use of views, sunlight, access, privacy and outdoor living areas.

If you’re planning an extension with Downland Studio, we can ask whether you’d like to explore professional garden design as part of the wider conversation.

Clear from the beginning

Independent expertise, clearly arranged.

Landscape and garden design services are provided by independent specialists rather than directly by Downland Studio.

If you’d like an introduction, the designer will discuss your project, confirm the services they can offer and provide their own quotation. Any appointment, fees and specialist design responsibilities are agreed directly between you and the landscape designer.

Downland Studio remains responsible for its own separately agreed architectural services. We do not guarantee the availability or work of an independent specialist.

A clear arrangement

01

Introduced independently

The designer is not an employee or in-house service of Downland Studio.

02

Quoted directly

The specialist sets out their own scope and fees before any work is agreed.

03

Appointed by you

You decide whether to proceed and agree the appointment directly with the designer.

Fees & appointments

A quotation suited to your garden.

The cost of professional garden design depends on the size of the space, the complexity of the proposals and how much design detail is required.

A small concept exercise will differ from a comprehensive landscape design package. The independent designer will discuss your requirements and provide a quotation before any work is agreed.

Landscape design is arranged and quoted separately. It is not included in the Downland Studio Fees Calculator.

Your questions, answered

Landscape design questions.

Can I get help with just a few garden ideas?

Potentially. You can discuss a smaller concept or advice session with the independent designer, who will confirm which services they offer.

Should I consider garden design before building my extension?

It can help to consider the relationship between house and garden early, particularly where external levels, terraces, access or drainage may be affected.

Does Downland Studio carry out the landscape design?

No. Downland Studio can introduce independent specialists. If you choose to proceed, you appoint and pay the designer directly.

Will the landscape designer provide their own quotation?

Yes. The designer will explain their proposed scope and fees before you agree to any work.

Can landscape design be coordinated with my extension drawings?

Where appropriate, relevant information can be coordinated between the appointed professionals, subject to each person’s agreed scope and responsibilities.
